Isolation of the Surge Protective Device (SPD) via a thermal protection (TPMOV)

Surge Trap surge protective devices are designed around a thermally-protected Metal Oxyde Varistor (MOV). The varistances of this technology can fail under two main conditions: thermal runaway or short-circuit. The MOVs are slightly degraded when ageing under normal operation nevertheless it leads to a dramatic end of life. A conductive path is drawn inside the crystalline structure of MOV’s. It’s necessary to be capable to isolate the protection component before huge damages occur in the installation it’s intended to protect.

The TPMOV from Ferraz Shawmut, the core of Surge Trap surge protective devices are thermally protected. When the temperature of the varistor reaches a pre-defined level not be overstepped an arc shield moves and ensures the isolation of the protection.

All the Surge Trap surge protective devices incorporated into the Helio Box operate according to this principle. Once the isolation is achieved an indicator located in front is tripping. It can be seen through the transparent cover of the Helio Box. A microswitch for remote signaling may be ordered as an option.
