The fail-safe mechanism

Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) is a sintered-ceramic electronic component with a U-I non linear characteristic.
When crossed by a too high transient current or subjected to repetitive surge currents the MOV shorts. Due to a runaway process inside the ceramic bulk the end of life is unfortunately catastrophic. Explosion often occurs.

To recover the status of a safe component the MOV needs to be thermally protected.
The best way to achieve is this is to stick to these three steps:

- First checking permanently the MOV’s temperature
- Then isolate the MOV from the circuit before the thermal runaway starts
- Finally prevent definitely a possible re-arcing

TPMOV® Technology by Ferraz Shawmut (patented process) is the only solution in the marketplace meeting precisely the solution required.

Surge Trap® SPDs (Surge Protective Devices) with TPMOV® Technology inside are ‘fail-safe’. They fail safely!

The Production Quality Control process for TPMOV® Technology is a key point. The MOVs are electrically checked 100% before and after soldering. Soldering stations are permanently monitored, any abnormal deviation of key parameters locked up the machine.
